My college includes the ISBN for the textbooks in the online class information. Save you some money there and also there is no sales tax. Students get Amazon Prime free for six-months then after that it is $40 a year (instead of $80) as long as they still have a valid .edu email. Not only does this include a discount on purchases but free 2-day shipping (which since Amazon has a center in Phoenix ends up being over-night shipping. Ordered a Cisco book around 10:00 PM local time on Monday, got it the next day (Tuesday) around Noon).FF Extension Guruhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13582647004716743827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13777170.post-16704475420108609032012-01-29T16:44:13.844-06:002012-01-29T16:44:13.844-06:00@ FFGuru - My daughter and I were having a similar...@ FFGuru - My daughter and I were having a similar conversation on the drive home yesterday. Apparently the college she will be attending offers textbooks on Kindle as well. She thought that based on her study-style that wouldn't work out well. For textbooks/study-material she wants the hard-copy version.

I've found that the Kindle is great for pleasure-reading, but having to flip back n forth and dig around for stuff, we both are just that much more comfortable with the Kindle.

Same goes for my technical books. What I will do is keep PDF versions of cheat-sheets and the like on it. Whitepapers, stuff like that for quick reads.

Have you considered the Free Reading Apps? You could probably find one for your laptop and get the same benefit but keep the laptop and skip the fire.

At least you could try out the Kindle E Book format before investing in dedicated Kindle hardware.

Truth be told, I'm a bit envious of Lavie's Kindle Fire, but when I toss the E Ink version I have that is super slim, super durable, and very portable I have no complaints. And like you I quite enjoy the extended flexibility and power of my laptop.

Cheers!

--Claus V.Claushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11692921474310162470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13777170.post-84322541327201294372012-01-28T21:51:05.332-06:002012-01-28T21:51:05.332-06:00I still keep debating as to getting a Kindle Fire....I still keep debating as to getting a Kindle Fire. My folks both have Nooks (that was a shocker when they told me that, would have never imagined them going the eReader route). A couple people in my networking classes have them and mentioned how inexpensive the text books are on the Kindle. Right now all my Cisco classes are under the CCNA level so I can access an online version of the textbooks for free on The Network Academy via my home PC or laptop. Next fall I will be moving into the CCNP level classes and those do not have online text.

But, do I want to spend $200 just to get cheaper and online versions of textbooks. If I hadn't bought the laptop this past fall, may be yes. I don't read much books other than text books. I do read magazines, but call me old fashioned, I like having a physical magazine. Now, the Kindle is more portable than the laptop, but I am not sure how much I am going to use it. Of course I said the same thing last year when I bought my first smartphone. Now, I can't imagine not having one (checking Facebook and email on the go when I don't have the laptop).

Thoughts, suggestions. What would make the Kindle better than the laptop, other than portability and may be battery life (I almost made it through an entire 3.5 hour Cisco class with my laptop. But this semester I have access to power, so that is not an issue)?FF Extension Guruhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13582647004716743827noreply@blogger.com
